Age is not a bar anymore for Heart Problem

Famous Footballer Christian Eriksen, Denmark’s midfielder, suffered a heart attack and collapsed during the Euro 2020 football match against Finland in Copenhagen on June 12, 2021. This incident raised the eyebrows of the whole world. The fact that a finely tuned high performing athlete can have a heart attack, shook the world.

Footballer Christian Eriksen, Denmark’s midfielder, suffered a heart attack

Eriksen had a cardiac arrest in his late 20s. Hence, if you think you are not at risk for heart diseases because you don’t fit the stereotype of an older man experiencing a massive heart attack, then you may have a false sense of security. Fitness and good health are not enough to ward off cardiac problems.
It is not yet known what caused Eriksen to collapse and his heart to stop. However, the doctors said that maybe he has a congenital condition that has not been picked up till now. Congenital heart disease is a general term for a range of birth defects that affect the heart’s normal working process. “Congenital” means the condition is present from birth. Congenital heart disease is one of the most common types of birth defect.

Most Common Heart Disease Among Young Adults

Cardiovascular diseases would be the largest cause of death and disability in India by 2020 as per a World Health Organisation (WHO) report. The average age of people with heart ailments is coming down.
Common heart disease among young adults is Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) occurs at a younger age with over 50% of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) mortality occurring in individuals aged less than 50 years.
Conventional Coronary Artery Disease predominates the number of heart attacks in young adults. About 80% of heart attacks in young adults happens because of CAD, and nearly 60% of these patients suffer from a disease of just one Coronary Artery. The number of arteries increases in the case of older patients.
Though CAD deserves most of our attention, other causes of heart attacks should also be paid attention to. Nearly 4% of heart attacks in young adults are caused by inborn abnormalities while another 5% are triggered by blood clots, originated somewhere else and carried in the bloodstream to normal Coronary Arteries to create a blockage. Various disorders of the blood clotting system increase the risk of clot formation throughout the circulatory system by another 5%. Another 6% includes a wide range of problems like spasm or inflammation, radiation therapy for chest tumours, chest trauma or abuse of drugs like cocaine and others.

Most young adults are affected by high rates of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and smoking. These major risk factors tend to bring a heart attack almost 33% earlier than the usual age and often without a prior warning. Each of these problems is tragic in itself, but it is both common and preventable through some precaution.

Some different types of heart disease
• Coronary heart disease
• Arrhythmia
• Heart failure
• Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
• Myocardial infarction

Factors that cause Heart Disease
•Diabetes
•Hypertension
•Smoking
•Family history of premature heart disease
•Alcohol consumption
•Physical inactivity.

Symptoms- One may feel pain in the chest along with gastrointestinal indigestion or nausea. Another symptom is light-headedness or sweating, the most commonly seen symptom is fast heart rate or shortness of breath. One can also have no symptoms apart from a little discomfort.

When to See a Doctor
In any case of chest discomfort or chest pain, even if there is a little shortness of breath or any incident of fainting one should immediately consult the doctor.

Covid-19 poses more threat to senior citizens

Older adults are much more likely to get affected from Covid-19 than others. For older adults getting sick with Covid-19 might mean hospitalization, intensive care, ventilator or even death. The risk increases for people in their 50s or above are most likely to get very sick.

Senior Citizen Post Covid Precaution

Elderly people succumb more in the hand of Coronavirus. To save the aged population from becoming a prey for Coronavirus one should be more attentive to their health. A thorough check-up of their heart, lungs, will help prevent any cardiac, other difficulties. Elderly population mostly suffer from their heart related cardiac problems; a thorough check-up would lessen the risk of any Covid related problems in future. A good heart devoid of any cardiac problems, a good lung; i.e. a good physical condition in general provides better immunity. And immunity is our most potent weapon in this battle against Covid.

Senior Citizens – Aged People – Older People – Elderly People and Risk of Covid

Other factors like any underlying medical condition can also make the journey after getting ill with Covid-19 significantly harder. For example, serious heart conditions (heart failure, cardiomyopathies, coronary artery disease) , kidney disease, COPD, obesity, weakened immune system from an organ transplant, type 2 diabetes- can cause healthcare providers and the patients more trouble.

Conditions that require immediate medical attention :
It is important to watch for possible signs of COVID-19. Studies show that the average incubation period for the disease is 5 days however, some people developed the symptoms as late as 12 days. If you start developing any kind of Covid symptom, especially if you think you may have been exposed to the virus, immediately consult your doctor.
In some cases, symptoms can escalate quickly to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), this needs urgent medical treatment.

Safety measures need to be taken :

The best way to deal with a virus like Covid-19 is to avoid contact in the first place. There is no full proof strategy to prevent Coronavirus, but being careful, maintaining a good habit, and practices to prevent Coronavirus works in most of the cases.

Senior Citizens – Maintain Covid Protection Measures

THINGS TO DO –
· Stay home as much as possible, don’t venture out until it is extremely important, the less you come in contact, the better.
· Wear a mask while in public, maintain at least a gap of 6feet with other people.
· Use a 60% alcohol based sanitizer to wash your hands and all other touchable surfaces as frequently as you can.
· Don’t fall for the ruse of rumours, get vaccinated as early as possible. Vaccination is our most potent weapon in this battle.

Obesity, the silent killer at play during lockdown

Lockdown during this pandemic has introduced sedentary habits. As a result of personal restrictions, sedentary lifestyles, alcohol consumption and substance abuse increased. These new regime increased the risk of death from chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases(CVD) , which are the leading cause of the global mortality rate . Along with the rising rate of risk factors of CVDs there is also a surge in the number of non-communicable diseases (NCD)- related mortality rate.

How might unhealthy habits effect our health?

Average self-reported weight gain (kg) associated with unhealthy diet and lifestyle behaviors during lockdown in the UK

The lack of physical activities, unhealthy food habits along with disturbed sleep cycle made this lockdown a heaven for obesity and related diseases. Obesity can contribute to heart diseases in three ways.

It is known fact that obesity can cause a spike in bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels, but it also can lower high-density lipoproteins (HDL) i.e. good cholesterol. HDL cholesterol plays an important part in removing the bad cholesterol and working towards reducing the risk for heart diseases.

Obese individuals require more blood to supply oxygen and nutrients to their bodies, which causes an increase in blood pressure. Their body also requires more pressure to move the blood around. High blood pressure is a common cause of heart-attack, which is sadly more common for obese individuals.

Obesity leads to diabetes, which is one of the major indicator of heart diseases. According to the American Heart Association, at least 68 percent of people aged 65 or older with diabetes also have heart disease. While individuals with diabetes are said to be two to four times more likely to be at risk for heart disease, the American Heart Association also lists diabetes as being one of the top seven major controllable factors to prevent heart disease.

Fortunately there are some measure you can take to lose weight and reduce the risk of developing heart diseases. This process towards better health goes through regular exercises and balanced nutritious diet.

One should consult their doctors about creating an appropriate diet and exercise plan.

Patients with high level of blood sugar (diabetes), high blood pressure (hypertension), other ailments of liver, kidneys, regularly consuming multiple medicines for lifestyle related diseases like diabetes, blood pressure, digestive disorders, liver, kidneys problems in some cases may report heart related problems not necessarily people with preexisting cardiac problems only.
