Whether you are in US, UK, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai or for that matter
anywhere in the world outside West Bengal, one of your biggest worries is
the Medical Emergency of your elderly parents and also near and
dear ones staying in Kolkata or in districts of West Bengal.
When the dreaded phone call comes that one of your parents have fallen ill
and youre the only person they can turn to for guidance and support,
the feeling of helplessness is overwhelming. What they cannot understand is
that you are living far away and all the money in the world cannot ensure
that right decision and treatment has been made available to your ailing
parent. You begin to question yourself whether it was worth at all to come
outside West Bengal leaving your parents without the necessary support in
their old age. In a desperate attempt you resort to calling up your old
friends, relatives, acquaintances, so that they can help out be it
getting an ambulance or doctor just someone or somebody who will act
as if you were there! This is where DESUN comes in.
Besides having our own fleet of ambulances we know of ambulance services
catered by various agencies not only in Kolkata but in nearly all Districts
of West Bengal. We regularly get patients from districts who we direct
through various local ambulances. Further, patients get dropped off at home

DESUN is in a position to reach ambulances in any one of the above areas
within the shortest possible time and pick up the patient for coming over
directly to DESUN. However, before this is done you need to register through
the DESUN NRI Photo Card or DESUN NROB Photo Card.
Gift your parents the unique DESUN NRI Photo Card or DESUN NROB Photo Card.
Here are the steps you need to take :
- E-mail us passport size photo of the proposed member(s) (say your
father, mother or anyone you wish to sponsor) OR send us the photo by
courier.
- Send us Rs. 600 for registration through Western Union Money Transfer
(for NRIs) or through ICICI Bank (for NROBs)
Once we receive all the above the Photo Card will be issued (which is
like a barcoded credit card) and will carry the photo of the member and a
unique number. The Photo card will be mailed to the address given for the
purpose and a photo of this card will be e-mailed to you. The card is valid
for one year only.
When any medical emergency happens to any Photo Card holder someone,
including you, may contact DESUN. You will be asked for the name of the
patient and the NROB / NRI Registration Number. For medical emergency we
will contact the nearest ambulance service in case our own ambulances are
not available and also the phone number given to us from where the patient
needs to be picked up. The ambulance will pick up the patient and come
directly to DESUN Emergency. At the hospital Emergency the patient condition
will be assessed and our specialist doctors will take over from there. Two
persons earmarked by you staying in West Bengal will be in touch with the
hospital and they will be updated on all aspects of patient condition,
billing and other details.
Once you fill up the form and send it over to us, we
will send you the necessary instruction. If you are outside India (NRI) Rs.
600 needs to be transferred through Western Union Money Transfer. If you are
in India but outside West Bengal (NROB) you may deposit Rs. 600 in our ICICI
Bank Account.
Once registered 3 mobile numbers, which will be open 24 hours, will be let
known to you and the card holder. These numbers are to be called up during
medical emergency.

Is initial deposit money required for emergency
hospital admission?
For NRI / NROB Photo Card holders no initial deposit money is required for
emergency hospital admission. However, the initial deposit amount has to be
paid within 12 to 24 hours.
Is the Desun NRI / NROB Emergency mobile number
available for 24 hours?
Yes there are 3 mobile numbers and they are constantly manned by our
Emergency Department. Any information regarding picking up of the patient
and arranging ambulances will be available with this team. The numbers will
be sent over along with the DESUN Hospital NRI / NROB Photo Card.
How will I get to know the condition of my patient
admitted in DESUN?
Two key persons in West Bengal whose mobile numbers will be provided by you
will be updated regularly on all information about the patient and you may
contact them for updates. These two key persons will be put in contact with
counselors in the hospital, who will keep them updated.
How do I make payments towards hospital expenses ?
For medical emergency a deposit of Rs. 25,000 has to be made within 12 to
24 hours of admission in Indian Rupees.
Everyday between 5 to 7 pm the hospital may ask for advances based on the
cost of treatment. In normal cases pharmacy medicine are bought by the
patients family members as per prescription provided by the hospital
from the hospital pharmacy. However, for NROB / NRI Photo Card holders by
keeping an additional minimum advance of Rs. 10,000 at the hospital
pharmacy, indoor medicine prescription will be supplied internally by the
hospital.
Besides medical emergency, what about planned
surgeries recommended by a local doctor?
We suggest that the patient comes over alongwith someone responsible and
meet our specialist consultant doctor of the department. For NRI / NROB Card
Holders advance booking of consultants may be done over phone (same 3 mobile
numbers). We normally do not accept investigations, diagnostics of other
centers. Once our consultant doctor is convinced that the surgery is
necessary the patient will be advised for surgery.
In case there is no key person, whom do I contact ?
In such cases depending on the country you are residing and the time
difference with India two time zones will be given in a day when you can
talk to our counselors (between 10 am to 8 pm Indian time), who will update
you on the patient condition.
How do I get in touch with the treating doctor?
This can also be organized by the hospital depending on the severity of the
case once in 48 hours. The hospital will call you up and let the treating
doctor talk to you. The charges for our telephone calls will be Rs. 200 per
minute, subject to a minimum of Rs. 1000. This money has to be paid upfront.
Is it necessary to be a NRI / NROB Photo Card
holder to avail all these benefits?
Yes Unless you are a NRI / NROB Photo Card holder the above service
cannot be provided by the hospital.

Only after your remittance is received by us along with passport size photo
of each member, the NRI / NROB Photo Card will be issued.
How do I transfer a patient on a life supporting
machine from another nursing home / hospital to Desun?
In such instances the condition of the patient is generally very critical
hence special ambulance with life supporting facilities have to be provided
along with doctor and allied paramedical staff to shift the patient to
DESUN. The charges for these ambulance are higher than normal ambulances.
