Coronary Angioplasty

An angioplasty is a surgical procedure needed to open up the blocked arteries that supply blood to your heart muscle. These coronary arteries get blocked due to accumulation of plaque from increased levels of cholesterol. Doctors often perform this procedure where the blockage has space to be opened up.

The procedure is also called a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) or percutaneous coronary intervention. In many cases, doctors insert a coronary artery stent after an angioplasty. The stent helps keep the blood flowing and prevents the artery from narrowing again.

What is Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)?

An angioplasty is a surgical procedure needed to open up the blocked arteries that supply blood to your heart muscle. These coronary arteries get blocked due to accumulation of plaque from increased levels of cholesterol. Doctors often perform this procedure where the blockage has space to be opened up.

The procedure is also called a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) or percutaneous coronary intervention. In many cases, doctors insert a coronary artery stent after an angioplasty. The stent helps keep the blood flowing and prevents the artery from narrowing again.

Why is Angioplasty Done?

Heart arteries can become blocked or narrowed from a build-up of cholesterol, cells or other substances known as plaque. This can reduce blood flow to your heart and cause discomfort in the chest. Sometimes a blood clot can suddenly form or get worse and completely block blood flow, leading to a cardiac arrest.

Angioplasty opens blocked arteries and restores normal blood flow to your heart muscle. It is done by threading a catheter (thin tube) through a small puncture in a leg or arm artery to the heart. The blocked artery is opened by inflating a tiny balloon in it. Desun Hospital performs this balloon angioplasty successfully at the lowest cost in Kolkata.

Angioplasty with stenting is commonly used to treat conditions that narrow or block blood vessels and interrupt blood flow. These conditions include:

  • Alterations to medications or lifestyle changes have not improved your heart health
  • Patient complains of chest pain (angina) that is worsening
  • Coronary artery disease, a narrowing of the arteries that carry blood and oxygen to the heart muscle.
  • Narrowing of the large arteries due to hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis.
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD), a narrowing of the arteries in the legs or arms.
  • Carotid artery stenosis, a narrowing of the neck arteries supplying blood to the brain.
  • Narrowing or blockage in the veins in the chest, abdomen, pelvis, arms and legs.
  • Renal vascular hypertension, high blood pressure caused by a narrowing of the kidney arteries. Angioplasty and stenting may be used to help improve kidney function.
  • Narrowing in dialysis fistula or grafts. Fistulas and grafts are artificial blood vessel connections doctors use in kidney dialysis. Angioplasty is generally used when these connections become narrow or blocked. Stenting may also be needed in some cases.

Who Needs An Angioplasty ?

People with blockages in their heart arteries may need to undergo an angioplasty and is often used to treat the buildup of fatty plaques in your heart's blood vessels. This buildup is a type of heart disease known as atherosclerosis. Angioplasty may be a treatment option if:

  • Alterations to medications or lifestyle changes have not improved your heart health
  • Patient complains of chest pain (angina) that is worsening
  • Patient has a heart attack and the procedure will open a blocked artery, reducing damage to the heart

Why Act Immediately ?

Getting an angioplasty done within the first hours after a heart attack may reduce the risk of complications. Timing can be crucial. The faster the diagnosis the lower is the risk of complications and other fatal conditions.

Angioplasty is an efficient way to get blood flowing to the heart again quickly. The sooner your doctor restores your blood supply, the less damage there will be to your heart muscle. Angioplasty also relieves chest pain and may prevent shortness of breath and other symptoms of heart disease associated with a heart attack.

In many cases of cardiac diseases, the medical history shows that the patient has been suffering over long periods of time, resulting in heart blockages. Early diagnosis and treatment reduces chances of complications in surgical treatment and increases possibility of survival.

What Is The Procedure For Angioplasty?

Angioplasty is performed by a heart specialist (cardiologist) and a team of specialized cardiovascular nurses and technicians in a special operating room called a cardiac catheterization laboratory. The following steps are followed:

    • Angioplasty is performed through an artery in the groin, arm or wrist area without general anesthesia.

    • <li">

Body receives fluids and blood-thinning medications (anti-coagulants) through an IV and the patient's heart rate, pulse, blood pressure and oxygen levels are monitored throughout.

  • A local anesthetic will be used to numb the area where a very small incision will be made. A small, thin guide-wire is then inserted in the blood vessel.

  • With the help of live imaging, your doctor will thread a thin tube (catheter) through your artery.

  • Contrast dye is injected through the catheter once to allow the doctor to identify the blockage (Angiogram)

  • A small balloon with or without a stent at the tip of the catheter is inflated at the site of the blockage, widening the blocked artery. After the artery is stretched, the balloon is deflated and the catheter is removed.

  • In case of several blockages, Angioplasty can take up to several hours, depending on the level of complications.

What Is Stent Placement In Angioplasty?

Most people who have an angioplasty also have a stent placed in their blocked artery during the same procedure. A stent, which looks like a tiny coil of wire mesh, supports the walls of the artery and helps prevent it from re-narrowing after the angioplasty.

Here's what happens during a stent placement:

  • At Desun Hospital, a stent (which is collapsed around a balloon at the tip of the catheter) is inserted through the wrist and guided through the artery to the blockage.
  • At the blockage, the balloon is inflated and the spring-like stent expands and locks into place inside the artery.
  • The stent stays in the artery permanently to hold it open and improve blood flow to your heart. In some cases, more than one stent may be needed to open a blockage.
  • Once the stent is in place, the balloon catheter is deflated and removed.
  • An angiogram follows, to see how well blood flows through the newly widened artery.

  • Most stents implanted during an angioplasty are drug coated. The medication in the stent is slowly released to help prevent future plaque buildup and the re-narrowing of the blood vessel.

Does Angioplasty hurt?

  • No, angioplasty causes very little pain. The doctor will numb the place with a local anaesthesia where the catheter will be inserted. You may feel some pressure as the stent is released.
  • You’ll be awake and alert but may be given medicine to help you relax.
