Definition of Stroke

A Brain Stroke is a condition when the brain do not receive enough oxygen and nutrients

Strokes are of 3 types

  • Ischemic Strokes

It happens when the arteries to the brain have got narrow or blocked. This type of stroke is mostly treated with medicines

  • Hemorrhagic Strokes

This is condition when the arteries around the brain burst or start leaking.  This stroke is mostly treated with surgical intervention

  • Transient Ischemic Attacks

Here , for few seconds there may be a blockage in the artery due to an embolus .

Myth 1: Stroke is always a heart attack

Myth 2: Stroke is not usual, it is rare

Myth 3: Stroke only happens to aged people and mostly above 60 years of age

Myth 4: Strokes can strike anyone, there are no ways to reduce chances or prevent stroke

Myth 5: Strokes are not related to family history and anyone is equally susceptible to stroke

Myth 6: Symptoms of strokes are not distinct and cannot be diagnosed easily

Myth 7: There is only a type of stroke

Strokes cause brain damage, so earlier medical attention and required treatment starts the chances of brain damage is minimum.

It is important to get to a superspeciality hospital, where the patient will be attended by specialist doctors in short time and get appropriate medical treatment. If someone is having a stroke or had a stroke it is best to call the ambulance immediately and take the person to the hospital.

Preventive Measures to Reduce Chances of a Stroke

  1. Quit smoking
  2. Avoid excess alcohol
  3. Avoid drugs and self medication
  4. Healthy weight management
  5. Proper nutritious and balanced diet
  6. Proper management of blood sugar (diabetes), blood pressure and other health conditions
  7. Manage stress
  8. Avoid anger
  9. Take proper rest and sleep 8 hours daily
