What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a procedure which allows doctor to look inside the uterus in order to diagnose and treat causes of abnormal bleeding. Hysteroscopy is done using a Hysteroscope, a thin, lighted tube which is inserted into the vagina to examine the cervix and inside of the uterus.

What is Laparoscopy?

A Laparoscopy involves having 2 small incisions made - 1 at the lower border of the umbilicus and the other just above the pubic hairline. A stitch will be used to close the incisions and this will dissolve over time. The abdominal cavity is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to enable a good view of the pelvic organs. Then a slim telescope known as a laparoscope is inserted into the abdominal cavity to enable the pelvic organs to be inspected. A second, even smaller incision is made just below the pubic hairline and a special pair of forceps or probe is inserted. Both incisions are so small that once they have healed they are virtually invisible. If any abnormality is found it is sometimes possible to treat this at the time of laparoscopy (i.e. division of adhesions, aspiration of cysts or diathermy to endometriosis).

What is Dye Test?

A small amount of dye is passed through the cervix into the uterus. It is possible to see whether the dye enters the tubes, how rapidly it flows through them and whether any free spill of dye occurs and how easily this is achieved.

What Precautions to be taken before the procedure?

These procedures are normally performed under a general anaesthesia. It is very important that you are not pregnant at the time of the procedure so it is essential you use an effective form of contraception from the beginning of the period prior to your admission to hospital. If you know that your period is likely to come around the time of your operation date please contact the doctor so that a prescription can be sent to delay your period.

How much time does the operation take?

The operation takes approximately 1 hour.

What to expect post operation?

After the operation you may feel rather bloated and uncomfortable for 24 hours or so and some women experience some pain around the shoulder area for a few days. This pain can occur when some residual gas is trapped inside the abdomen and irritating the diaphragm (most of the gas is removed at the end of the operation). Your abdomen may feel swollen and painful for a few days. Some patients also experience a sore throat relating to the anaesthetic procedure. You may also have some vaginal bleeding and this can have a blue tinge if dye was used. If you continue to lose blood heavily or have excessive pain, you will need to contact the doctor at once.
