What is Tetralogy of Fallot?

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a rare condition caused by a combination of four heart defects that are present since birth. These defects, which affect the structure of the heart, cause oxygen-poor blood to flow out of theheart and into the rest of the body.

What are the symptoms of Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF)?

Symptoms may vary, depending on the extent of obstruction of blood flow out of the right ventricle and into the lungs. Signs and symptoms may include:

• A bluish colouration of the skin caused by lesser amount of oxygen in blood
• Shortness of breath and rapid breathing, especially during feeding
• Loss of consciousness
• An abnormal, rounded shape of the nail bed known as Clubbing of fingers and toes
• Poor weight gain
• Tiring easily while playing
• Irritability
• A heart murmur

What are the causes of TOF?

TOF or Tetralogy of Fallot occurs during fetal growth, when the baby’s heart is developing. Various factors cause TOF such as:

• Poor maternal nutrition
• Viral illness or genetic disorders

• Pulmonary valve Stenosis: This is the narrowing of the pulmonary valve, the flap which separates the right ventricle of the heart from the pulmonary artery, which is the main blood vessel leading to the lungs.
• Ventricular Septal Defect: This is a hole in the wall that separates the two lower chambers known as the ventricles of the heart.
• Overriding Aorta: Normally the aorta, the main artery leading out to the body, branches off the left ventricle. In case of TOF the aorta is shifted slightly to the right and lies directly above the ventricular septal defect.

What are the treatments available for TOF?

Valve stenosis can sometimes be treated with medications if the symptoms are mild. When the complications are beyond medications then surgery is advised. The most common surgery for treating Mitral Valve Stenosis is Balloon Mitral Valvotomy.
