Cardiac Surgery

DESUN can justifiably claim to have one of the finest cardiac surgery teams in India. Led by renowned doctors, the members of the team are senior surgeons and anesthetists who have pioneered several new surgical techniques over the last few years.

Out of the total number of critical-care beds, 90 are devoted to cardio-thoracic surgery patients. Of the total number of operating theatres, 2 are dedicated to cardiac care for undertaking surgeries ranging from valve replacements to correction of congenital defects. Surgical expertise is backed up by sophisticated post-operative care, ensuring that DESUN is one of the best centers for high-risk cardiac surgeries.
DESUN has highly advanced steel modular operating theatres that are fully equipped with the latest state-of-the-art instrument for the convenience of the surgeons.
The aim is not just to prolong life, but also to ensure that all normal activities can be resumed as quickly as possible. Some of the latest technology used by DESUN for Cardiac Surgeries are:

  • Beating Heart Arterial Bypass Surgery: with this technique during bypass the heart is not stopped and it continues to beat throughout the operation.
  • Arterial Grafting: with this technique instead of taking the Veins from the leg (as is done in other places), arteries from the chest & arms are used for this bypass. Normally Vein Bypass lasts for 10 years whereas, Arterial Bypass helps you live longer whereas, Arterial Bypass helps you live longer as it lasts for 25 years (arteries being better than veins)

Some of the Cardiac Surgeries done successfully at DESUN are:

Radial Angiography

Here the catheter is guided through the wrist instead of the thigh. It is a relatively new process and DESUN is one of the few hospitals in Kolkata where radial angiography is being performed very successfully. It is relatively less painful than conventional Angiography and overnight hospital stay is also not required. At DESUN we have the necessary expertise and equipment to perform such a complicated procedure.

Coronary Angiography (CAG)

Coronary angiograms are part of a general group of procedures known as heart (cardiac) catheterizations. It is an investigative procedure that uses imaging to see your heart's blood vessels. The test is generally done to see if there's a restriction in blood flow going to the heart.

Radial Angioplasty

We are one of the first hospitals in Kolkata to have performed radial angioplasty successfully. Here the catheter is first guided through the wrist and then standard Angioplasty procedures are followed. It reduces the chances of infection and haemorrhage substantially.
The Cathlab at DESUN permits techniques such as Coronary Angiography, Angioplasty, Balloon Valvuloplasty etc. which do not require full surgical intervention, along with other sophisticated investigations for the first time in Kolkata.

Coronary or Balloon Angioplasty (PTCA)

An angioplasty is a surgical procedure needed to open up the blocked arteries that supply blood to your heart muscle. These coronary arteries get blocked due to accumulation of plaque from increased levels of cholesterol. Doctors often perform this procedure where the blockage has space to be opened up.

The procedure is also called a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) or percutaneous coronary intervention. In many cases, doctors insert a coronary artery stent after an angioplasty. The stent helps keep the blood flowing and prevents the artery from narrowing again.

This procedure, also done at DESUN’s Cathlab, entails a dilatation of the narrowed coronary arteries with a balloon or stent, which may sometimes be permanently placed at the site of the blockage or narrowing.

Permanent Pacemaker (PPM)

It is a small unit that helps your heart beat consistently. It provides a small electric stimulation that helps maintain a steady heartbeat for different conditions of arrhythmias. This helps the patient’s body circulate oxygen and other essential nutrients that it needs from the blood vessels.

The doctor implants the device under the skin by making a small pocket and connects it to their heart with the help of fine wires. Some patients need a pacemaker for a short time (like after a heart attack) to regularize the heart’s rhythm. For them an external pacemaker is attached that is battery operated and remains outside the skin (in form of a belt or otherwise).

Heart Bypass Surgery (CABG)

Heart Bypass is a surgical procedure to restore normal blood flow to an obstructed coronary artery. In Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), popularly called “Heart Bypass”, healthy veins or arteries from the patient’s body are grafted to create a bypass channel that ensures proper blood & oxygen flow to the heart. When blood flow reduces due to coronary heart disease (CHD), these arteries or veins, often taken from your leg or forearm, are grafted (attached) to the coronary artery to let blood “detour” past a narrowing or blockage in this artery.

Open Heart Surgery

Open-heart surgery generally refers to operations performed on the heart that require a patient being placed on the heart-lung bypass machine. DESUN regularly performs a large number of such surgeries with a very high success rate.

Valve Replacement with Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery

Minimally Invasive Valve Surgery is a breakthrough approach to treating heart valve diseases. Rather than making a large incision through the breastbone (sternum) to gain access to the heart, this method uses sophisticated instruments to perform the surgery through a smaller incision at the side of the chest.
Minimally invasive valve surgeries performed at DESUN include:

  • Aortic valve repair or replacement
  • Mitral valve repair and replacement
  • Tricuspid valve repair or replacement

Minimally invasive surgery has many benefits, including the following:

  • Faster recovery and a quicker return to normal activities
  • Less time spent in the hospital
  • Small incisions that result in little to no scarring. Depending upon the procedure, incisions may be four to five dime-size slits or a 3- to 5-inch incision at the side of the chest.
  • Significantly less pain, with many patients able to control pain with Tylenol or other over-the-counter pain medicines
  • Because the breastbone (sternum) remains intact, patients avoid the risk for infection and other complications associated with cutting it (sternotomy) that may occur with traditional open-chest procedures

Port access heart surgery is the cutting edge in heart surgery technology in the world. It has been acquired from a Northern California company by DESUN. HEART PORT treatment makes available a platform for the performance of a variety of cardiac surgeries and procedures through small incisions (ports), without the use of the risky Median Sternotomy (complete cutting open of the sternum) that exposes the chest cavity to the dangers of infection and hemorrhage. Routine procedures performed via HEART PORT at DESUN are:

  • Minimally invasive direct Coronary artery Bypass (MID CABG)
  • Saphenous (leg) Vein Harvest
